Following the newspapers and journals the last weeks, the actual situation at PETROBRAS – one of the largest Brazilian companies – is still getting worse. After the arrest of leading managers of PETROBRAS and major Brazilian building companies (NZZ_15.11.2014), a new article from Alexander Busch describes now the actual situation and new developments. The article – published yesterday (NZZ_21.11.2014) – draws an insightful overview.

As PETROBRAS also has a very strong influence on the BOVESPA (stock index Sao Paulo), the crisis has the potential to damage the Brazilian economy in a very serious way, due to severe side effects. On the other hand one could argue that finally after this coming out, the things can only get better – representing new business opportunities for foreign companies. But this will only happen, when the crisis management will be improved, forced by internal OR even external activities (as we can read in the article).

In 2016 we will have the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Everybody is complaining about the Brazilian delay and missing or pants project management. But what about the actual games? What Brazil could learn from Russia?

(1) Scandals are common – an actual report about hotels around Sotchi describes the first olympic scandal . As we can see on some remarkable pictures, „we have a situation here“ in Sotchi. Besides „yellow“ water, there are other very interesting insights. Just have a look at the „banheiros„. We could argue, its just some kind of discipline and simply part of the games, as we can see here.

(2) Brazilians are somehow cosmopolitans – able to adapt to somehow weired environments and

(3) nobody is perfect – who cares about missing infrastructure and dysfunctional equipment – just have fun!

Some years ago in Nov 2009, an interesting issue of THE ECONOMIST commented the extraordinary development of the Brazilian economic area (read more).

Now in Oct 2013 some years later, a new article describes some new insights and questions former positive findings (read more). Without any doubt, the Brazilian government needs to reshape the economic frame towards clear investments in logistic infrastructure and industrial growth, avoiding further deindustrialization.

And the starting situation is not so bad – the actually 7th large economy receives appreciable cash inflow from commodity sales – an ideal situation for reinvestment. On the other hand and as a consequence, the high import taxes must be lowered, at least to enforce the needed and necessary industrial dynamic.

Brazilian Magazine Isto É has recently published an article comparing two of the most powerful women in todays international politics: Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff and German chancellor Angela Merkel. Both are being called the new „Iron Ladies“ in politics but, as the article states, going in opposite directions.

While Angela Merkel apparently has a lot more in common with the original „Iron Lady“, Margareth Thatcher, standing for a strict fiscal policy and budget cuts, Dilma believes that public investments are necessary for overcoming a „brutal recession“. In her speech during the last summit of Ibero-American leaders in Spain, past November 17th, Dilma criticized austerity as an instrument for recovering from the european economic crisis and recommended that Europe should not repeat the mistakes of Latin-American leaders, whose restriction measures under IWF’s pressure during the 80s and 90s have only led to an even worse recession. For Dilma, Europe should focus on growth, „exaggerated and simultaneous fiscal consolidation in every country is not the best response“ and budget cuts should not lead to even more reduction of social benefits for the population.

The brazilian Magazine illustrates its article with a picture of Dilma and Spain’s King Juan Carlos that means more than words could say: Dilma is holding Juan Carlos’s arm, while the King leans himself on a walking stick. Check it out here.

According to the newspaper „Estado de Sao Paulo“ Brazil again lost rank 6 in the list of the strongest economies in the world to Great Britain due to the weak real and world economic crisis. Brazil will gain it back only in 2016, according to the EIA – Economist Intelligence Unit.

Some months ago officials supported a weaker currency, as they argues about benefits for the increase of production factors. Considering the statement above, no one wonders that in the meantime officials from the central bank of Brazil argues that the Brazilian Real weakened too much (Businessweek – Bloomberg)
